Monday's cleanup in one click: routines

The same file to clean every week, always the same way. Instead of redoing the steps by hand, you record them once in a routine, which the browser keeps and which replays in one click. No macro, no install.

  1. Record the steps once

    In Chain cleaning steps, each step you add (filter, remove duplicates, rename a column, restore a postcode's leading zeros…) goes into the routine, in the order you set it.

  2. Replay it next week

    The routine stays in this browser. The following Monday, you drop the new file, one click reopens the routine, and it runs. Columns are matched by name, not by position.

  3. One file, a batch, or a whole folder

    The same routine applies to one file, to all of the month's files at once, or to an entire folder. You can also download it to hand to a colleague.

How it works

Three steps. Everything happens on your machine.

  1. Drop your file

    Drag a workbook or a CSV onto the page. Your browser reads it and it lives in the tab's memory: not one byte goes over the network.

  2. Check, then run

    The tool shows what it understood (columns, duplicates, encoding, problems found) and offers only its own settings. One button, which says what it does.

  3. Save the result

    The output file goes from the tab's memory to your disk, when you ask for it.

What it does not do

What these tools cannot do, written here rather than discovered along the way.

  • It is not a spreadsheet. You apply tasks to a file; you do not edit cells one by one.
  • Old .xls files (Excel 97-2003) are read for their values, by the data tools. The workbook tools, which repair the file itself, need an .xlsx: Convert a spreadsheet produces one.
  • A password-protected workbook opens with its password, not without it. Nothing is cracked or guessed: you type the password, the workbook is decrypted in the tab, and the file produced is no longer protected. Recent .xlsx and old .xls files (Excel 97-2003) alike are handled; only a very old Excel 95 .xls stays closed.
  • Formulas are not recalculated. The values read and carried over are the ones Excel saved at its last calculation.
  • Everything fits in the tab's memory, except large CSV files, which are read from disk in chunks. A workbook of several hundred megabytes can exceed what a browser allows a page.
  • Klargrid is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. Excel is a Microsoft trademark; the word here refers to the files the tool handles.

Why this site exists

Online tools all ask for the same thing: your files. A payroll file, a trial balance, a customer database, uploaded to a stranger, processed on their servers, "deleted within the hour", promised. Excel add-ins, for their part, need an installation and rights that company workstations do not grant. Klargrid needs neither. What we do instead.
