Excel messages
Excel warns, it rarely explains. Here are the most frequent messages, what they really say, and how to make them go away.
When the file opens
- "This workbook contains links to one or more external sources"
- "We found a problem with some content"
- "The file format and extension don't match"
- "File not loaded completely"
- "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened"
- "Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid"
- "Excel found a problem with one or more formula references"
While working
- "Too many different cell formats"
- "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources"
- "There are one or more circular references"
- "Number stored as text"
- "To do this, all the merged cells need to be the same size"
- "Microsoft Excel can't insert new cells"
- "This value doesn't match the data validation restrictions"
- "There's a problem with this formula"
- "Possible data loss" when saving as CSV
- "Reference isn't valid"
