The dependency map of an Excel workbook
You inherit a twenty-sheet workbook, want to delete one sheet, move a file on the network, understand where a total comes from. First you need to know what reads what: the map shows it, sheet by sheet, without opening a single formula.
What this tool does
- A diagram of the sheets in tiers: inputs on the left, calculations in the middle, summaries on the right, with the number of formulas on each link.
- The outside workbooks called, the file targeted and an example formula for each.
- The defined names: what they refer to, and the sheets that use them; those no formula uses are flagged.
- Hidden sheets appear too, dashed: they are often where the calculations hide.
- The map can be saved as a workbook, to document the file.
What it does not do: Only cell formulas are read. A reference built by INDIRECT, written in a macro, a data validation or a chart does not appear on the map.
No file is uploaded. Turn off your network once this page has loaded: the tool keeps working. How to check it yourself.
